Tennis Academy Instructors

Edward Mosely

I grew up in South Carolina and played Division 1 Tennis and Golf at Wofford College in the Southern Conference.  I majored in Spanish and Government at Wofford and have worked in investment banking, the for-profit higher education sector and as a Dean of Students, Teacher and Coach for 6 years in the independent boarding school world.  I received my MBA from UNC's Kenan-Flagler MBA program in 2009, served as a Supply Corps Officer im the Navy Reserves and now work as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch in the Chapel Hill office.

Alex "AJ" Jones

I grew up playing all over the country in junior USTA tournaments from 12-18 then got a scholarship to play at UNC Charlotte and played there for 2 years. Started coaching after college and just recently got my certification through the USPTA.

At the advice of former Duke men’s coach Jay Lapidus, AJ started training at Smith Stearns 3 years ago so he could pursue all his tennis goals. AJ has worked very hard over the years and has had great success as he was selected to play in high level events in all age divisions including the Southern Closed, Zonals, Nationals, and the Super National Championships. He loves the competitive environment and his fun personality always make him a joy to work with. AJ credits all of the coaches with helping him in different aspects of his game both physically and mentally and ultimately preparing him to play collegiate tennis.

Javier Pabon

Dr. Javier Pabon grew up playing tennis on the South American clay.  He played and coached at Academia Internacional de Quito, where he was able to hit with several future professional tennis players and attended numerous clinics, including a couple with legendary coach Nick Bollettieri.

AS a junior player, Javier played in the state, national and regional tournaments in South America.  Later he was part of his college men's tennis team.  He is a volunteer assistant coach for the women's tennis team at Methodist University, where he is an associate professor of Spanish, and a chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literature.  In his first season as a volunteer assistant, Pabon helped Methodist Univerwsity to a 10-5 overall record in a season cut short by Covid-19.

Sean Bilsborrow

Sean Bilsborrow has served as head coach of Durham Academy's varsity boys tennis team since 2002.  A Durham Academy alumnus (1994), Bilsborrow was a four-year starter at Durham Academy and a highly-ranked USTA junior.  Sean went on to play at Bates College.  After graduating, he taught tennis at The Farm before beginning his high school coaching career.  Under Bilsborrow's tutelage, DA tennis teams have won 245 matches, 10 conference championships and produced 20 All-State players.
